When Shea Patterson made up his mindA last December to take a chance at Michigan, he did so with plenty of faith and almost nothing promised.A 

He not only left Ole Miss without the promise of immediate eligibility (eventually gained months later), but he also left the type of spread offense he'd been exclusively associated with in college for a version of the pro-style that wasA a€” in many waysA a€” going to be brand new.A 

Jim Harbaugh runs some spread concepts, but this is an NFL-style system, first and foremost. Patterson knew that. It's part of the reason why he wanted to come here. A 

"I've got the playbook," Patterson told the Free Press during an interview a few days before Christmas, roughly a week after he made up his mind to join Harbaugh's program. "A whole binder full."A 

The following eight months saw Patterson spend countless hours flipping throughA that binder. Inside a film room. Eventually on a practice field. Around new teammates, coaches, trainers and everything else.A
