Chase Winovich nailed it in July and then stood inside Notre Dame Stadium last weekend trying his best to be honest about another performance thatA a€” for a variety of reasons across the rosterA A a€” was nowhere near good enough.A 

Michigan's fifth-year senior defensive end had the season of his life last year. He opened the 2018 campaign with another strong individual performance (one penalty notwithstanding).A 

But still, as he tried to diagnose why the team as a whole once again fell short on a big stage.A 

There was frustration, too, of course. Winovich and several other veteran players had spent the summer doing all they could to avoid a repeat of what ultimately derailed progress a year ago.A 

The offense had its problems, yes. But the team at large simply never found a way to turn its own fortune around. Take this quote from July:A 

"When you go 8-5, ita€™s the sad truth of the way it is," Winovich said at the time. "You kind of become numb to losing."A
